BREAST PROCEDURE

Nipple Reduction

At NexGen, we perform nipple revision surgery with breast augmentation, lifts, or reduction surgeries to help our patients achieve what they envision about their breasts.

What is
Nipple Reduction?

It’s natural for the nipples or areolas to increase in shape or size in most individuals. Areola is the dark area around the nipples. Irregular areola and droopy or protruding nipples can lead to insecurity and embarrassment in many people, regardless of gender. But this condition is treatable through nipple reduction or nipple revision surgery.

At NexGen, we perform nipple revision surgery with breast augmentation, lifts, or reduction surgeries to help our patients achieve what they envision about their breasts. Our board-certified surgeon aims to make your irregular or enlarged nipples and areola less prominent. The result? Beautiful and symmetrical breasts with perfectly-aligned nipples!

BENEFITS
  • Minimizes the size of enlarged nipples or areolas
  • Corrects too-prominent or protruding nipples
  • Improves the shape of the nipples
  • Makes the nipples or areolas even and asymmetrical
  • Reconstructs inverted nipples
  • Restores damaged nipples or areolas

Treatment Options

Nipple Reduction With Wedge Technique

This process requires the surgeon to make a wedge-shaped incision in the nipple and remove this part to reduce its size. Both sides are then stitched or reattached together to complete the process.

Nipple Reduction With Flap Technique

The flap technique requires the surgeon to cut the nipples from the base at a certain projection level while leaving a little part or “flap” behind. Then, they remove the excess tissue from the nipples, and the flap is stitched back to achieve smaller nipples.

Nipple Reduction With Wedge Technique

This process requires the surgeon to make a wedge-shaped incision in the nipple and remove this part to reduce its size. Both sides are then stitched or reattached together to complete the process.

Who is a
Good Candidate?

Individuals with no diagnosis or underlying health concerns can go for nipple reduction if they’re unsatisfied with their appearance. Those with nipple piercings would need a redo after the surgery. The ideal candidate for nipple revision surgery is the one who wants to:

  • Reduce the size of their nipples or areola
  • Make their nipples or areola less prominent
  • Enhance the shape of their nipples or areola

Procedure Process
and Recovery

1

Assessment

The nipple reduction process starts with the surgeon evaluating your nipples and areolas to find the areas for correction. Depending on the diagnosis, they choose the proper technique that treats your nipple issue, whether the flap technique or the wedge-shaped method.
2

Incisions

The surgeon then creates the incisions on your nipples to remove the excess area. They are usually made at the nipple’s base to extract the skin from the entire region.
3

Reduction of Nipples

After making the incisions and removing the excess skin, the surgeon attaches both sides of the nipples to the areola. This gives you shortened nipples with a visibly reduced size. Finally, they cover the entire nipple area with dissolving sutures and gauze dressings to finish the process. Within a few weeks, you can achieve well-balanced nipples in their ideal size.
4

Post-Surgery Care

The nipples or areolas usually feel tender after the nipple reduction surgery due to localized swelling. The soreness heals with time, but you may observe asymmetry during this period. It’s normal, so don’t start panicking or calling your surgeon repeatedly. The doctor will recommend a cold compress to relieve the swelling or discomfort instead of heat, as it can worsen your situation. They will also give you a post-surgical bra or special tape to wear 24 hours a day for several weeks to minimize swelling and support the breast.
5

Recovery

Your recovery period will depend on the breast enhancement process you underwent, along with nipple revision. You will also have to apply a gentle moisturizer on the wounds once they start to heal to prevent flakiness and dryness in the nipple and areola. With process care, most patients return to everyday life after 1 to 2 weeks off from normal activities and 6 weeks from strenuous work. You must also prevent heavy lifting for 2 to 4 weeks after the surgery.

FAQs

Can surgery reduce nipple size?

Nipple reduction surgery can reduce the nipple size by decreasing its diameter from the base. This process is ideal for making protruding nipples less visible. Depending on the patient’s requirement, the surgeon may perform other breast enhancement procedures along with nipple reduction.

How is nipple reduction surgery done?

In nipple reduction surgery, the doctor makes incisions on the base of the patient’s nipples to remove the skin around the entire area. The nipple is then telescoped into the areola (the dark area around the nipples) to reduce its size.

Is nipple reduction risky?

Nipple reduction is generally safe when an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Yamini performs it. The process does come with a few risks, such as loss of sensation around the nipples, but it’s usually rare.

What to expect after a nipple reduction?

You will experience severe swelling and mild pain for some days after the nipple reduction surgery. Complete recovery may take up to 6 weeks, depending on your post-surgery care. Make sure to minimize lifting heavy weights, working out, performing sexual activities, and doing strenuous work.
