What is
Tummy Tuck?

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that molds an individual’s body in its desired appearance and shape. It’s one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries across the world, aiming to help people achieve a slimmer body size with minimal pain and scarring.

It’s normal for a human body to go out-of-shape after pregnancy, weight loss, or surgery. At NexGen, our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Dan Yamini, performs the tummy tuck to help people restore their original body contour by pulling the skin down on the belly. The result? A slim and tight abdomen for a confident outlook!

BENEFITS
  • Removes excess mass from the belly for the perfect hourglass figure
  • Strengthens the abdominal muscles or core
  • Restores the body contour
  • Ensures better fitting of outfits
  • Improve daily life and minimizes risks of medical issues

Treatment Options

Standard or Full Tummy Tuck

The standard tummy tuck requires the surgeon to make a hip-to-hip incision—starting along the bikini and extending around the belly button (navel). The excess skin from this area is then removed to reposition the belly shape. The doctor uses internal sutures to tighten the abdominal muscles and pulls the remaining skin down over the stomach.

Extended Tummy Tuck

The extended tummy tuck involves a horizontal incision that extends from the hips to the lower back. It is made so that the scar’s ending tail will be easily visible when you see the patient’s body from the posterior side. This process removes more skin than the standard tummy tuck, so it’s ideal for those who need a significant body transformation.

Fleur-De-Lis Tummy Tuck

The unique name of this tummy tuck technique is due to its incision pattern. It is similar to the three-pronged Fleur-De-Lis symbol, including a standard (horizontal) incision and a vertical incision extending to the abdomen’s middle. The vertical cut is more difficult to conceal than the horizontal, so doctors only use this surgery for people who need severe correction or body contour.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Mini tummy tucks are suggested for patients who need minimal improvement in their body shape. It includes making an incision (about 4 to 8 inches) above the individual’s pubic area to dissolve the excess skin after pregnancy or weight loss naturally. Mini tummy tucks don’t remove the skin from the abdomen or reposition the navel.

Who is a
Good Candidate?

Any person who has lost significant weight and needs a little touch-up on their abdominal area can undergo the tummy tuck. It will help them attain the perfect hourglass figure without doing more dieting. A good candidate for a tummy tuck must be:

  • Healthy with no diagnosed or underlying medical issues
  • Someone looking to lose the last layer of fat or excess skin from their belly
  • Not too obese (10 to 50 lbs)

Procedure Process
and Recovery

1

Assessment

The tummy tuck procedure starts with thoroughly assessing your skin and abdomen. The surgeon will sit with you to discuss your aesthetic goals and expectations. At NexGen, we take you into complete confidence about the entire procedure so you undergo it comfortably. The surgeon will then mark the right incision location and put you under anesthesia.
2

Incisions

The doctor then makes the incision(s) based on your body’s requirements to make your tummy appear flattened. The cut is typically made across the patient’s lower belly to eliminate excess skin and underlying tissues. Sometimes, the surgeon may make an opening near the belly button while keeping it intact in its original position (on the abdomen).
3

Stitching and Stretching the Abdominal Skin

After flattening the tummy, the surgeon makes internal stitches to tighten the patient’s abdominal muscles like an inner corset. Then, they stretch the remaining skin over the trimmed area to complete the procedure.
4

Post-Surgery Care

The doctor recommends pain medication to patients to relieve swelling in the affected area. The tummy tuck surgery usually leaves drains in place for a few days after surgery. Your surgeon will guide you on how to care for these drains. They will also prescribe antibiotics to maintain the drains and blood-thinning medications for a limited period. You may also have to wear a supportive abdominal binder six weeks after surgery for abdominal support and no fluid buildup.
5

Recovery

The resting period for tummy tuck ranges from 1 to 2 weeks. During this period, you will need a family member beside you until you fully recover. Medicines and binders can easily manage discomfort, swelling, and bruising. You must also refrain from making sudden waist movements to avoid the chances of the wound reopening. Be consistent with these preventive measures for six weeks post-surgery; you will be all set in no time!

FAQs

How will I know if I need a tummy tuck?

You need a tummy tuck surgery if you’re tired of having excess skin and stretch marks around your abdomen. The procedure removes unnecessary fat and tightens the loose skin in the patient’s lower belly to make it appear flat.

How long do tummy tucks last?

Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is permanent or everlasting. The removed fat can’t grow back, and the tightened skin can’t become loose again. However, if you gain new fat, the skin may stretch to make space for this additional bulk.

Does a tummy tuck change your body shape?

A tummy tuck dramatically changes your body shape and makes it appear more contoured. You can quickly achieve the perfect hourglass shape with this procedure with fuller buttocks, perkier breasts, and a flatter belly.

What happens to your body after a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck will make your belly sore and swollen for days or weeks. The surgeon may recommend you compression braces or garments for support. Your stomach may also feel numb for a few weeks or months.
