FACE PROCEDURE

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

At NexGen, Dr. Yamini performs otoplasty surgery using advanced technologies to ensure minimal scarring and risks.

What is
Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?

Many people are born with disproportionate ears that pop out of their faces and give them a funny look. It is a major concern in school-going children, often leading to bullying. Protruding ears can adversely affect one’s confidence and self-esteem. Otoplasty or ear surgery is the solution for all these people. The procedure adjusts the size, position, and shape of the ears to make them look normal.

At NexGen, Dr. Yamini performs otoplasty surgery using advanced technologies to ensure minimal scarring and risks. The procedure focuses on the ear’s auricle and reshapes it for a normal look. Otoplasty can also treat many congenital ear deformities, which your surgeon will assess during the consultation!

BENEFITS
  • Improves congenital deformities
  • Reduces the ear size in patients with macrotia
  • Makes ears flatter against the head
  • Reshapes stuck out ears to make them appear normal

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Treatment Options

Ear Augmentation

Ear augmentation is a type of ear surgery that enhances the size and shape of the outer ear. It is ideal for people with underdeveloped or small ears that haven’t reached their full size.

Ear Pinning

This procedure repositions the protruding ears and makes them lie flatter on the head. It’s recommended for people with stuck-out ears from both sides of the head.

Ear Reduction

People suffering from macrotia have huge ears that give them an unusual appearance. The ear reduction procedure can decrease the size of these ears, including the earlobes, to help these patients live normal life.

Who is a
Good Candidate?

Anyone unsatisfied with the size, shape, and position of their ears can go for otoplasty surgery. It’s specifically ideal for children aged 5 years, as the ear cartilage is easier to correct at this age. You should have no recurring ear infections or any underlying health issues. The best candidate for otoplasty is one who:

  • Is tired of unwanted attention due to protruding or “funny” ears
  • Wants to correct a congenital ear deformity
  • Wishes to achieve the perfect ear proportion

Procedure Process
and Recovery

1

Assessment

The otoplasty surgery at NexGen starts with a detailed one-on-one session between our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Yamini, and the patient. The surgeon talks to each individual to learn about their concerns, aesthetic goals, and expectations from the procedure. We aim to answer all your questions so that you go into the surgery with complete peace of mind. Once the consultation ends, the surgeon administers anesthesia for a comfortable, pain-free surgery.
2

Incisions

The surgeon then makes an incision depending on your ear’s deformity. It could be behind the ear or inside the ear folds. Protruding ear correction requires increasing the antihelical fold (present just inside the ear’s rim) and reducing the conchal cartilage (the external ear’s concavity).

Typically, incisions during otoplasty are made on the ear’s back. However, when they are required to be made on the front, the surgeon makes them within the folds to keep them hidden.

3

Manipulating or Adjusting the Ear Tissues

After making the incisions, the doctor accesses the underlying ear tissues and manipulates them according to the patient’s aesthetic requirements. They will also reshape and fold the cartilage to adjust the perfect size and shape. Once done, the incisions are closed with internal, dissolvable sutures to secure the new ear shape.
4

Post-Surgery Care

After the procedure, you will notice soreness, bruising, and numbness around your ear. Your doctor will give you a post-surgery care plan to help alleviate these symptoms quickly. A dressing will also be applied to your ears to keep the bandage in place for weeks. You may also have to wear a protective headband for additional safety.

Your surgeon will prevent you from participating in contact sports, strenuous activities, and swimmings for 4 to 6 weeks. It can extend to a few months, depending on your ear’s condition. You shouldn’t wet your hair for some days after the surgery.

5

Recovery

Your recovery period will vary depending on the nature of your ear procedure. Your doctor will guide you about it in post-surgery consultation. Typically, it takes 6 weeks for most patients to recover from otoplasty. Just stay connected with your doctor throughout your recovery and follow their guidelines to heal quicker.

FAQs

Can otoplasty reduce ear size?

Otoplasty can reshape your protruding ears, decrease their size, and enhance their symmetry. The procedure makes your face appear proportional to boost your self-esteem and confidence. It has a short recovery period with minimal scarring.

What is the best age for otoplasty?

Otoplasty gives more effective results on younger children, around 5 years of age, whose ears don’t develop fully. At this age, the cartilage is flexible enough to be manipulated or adjusted according to the patient’s desire. However, the surgery is also effective on adults and teenagers.

Is otoplasty painful?

Otoplasty can be painful depending on the procedure performed on your eyes. The surgeon uses anesthesia to minimize it during the surgery for the patient’s comfort. The actual pain is felt after the procedure. However, it is minimal and can go away in a few days or hours with proper care and medication.

How long does otoplasty surgery take to heal?

Otoplasty surgery can take up to 6 weeks to fully recover. However, you can resume your normal activities within a week while avoiding contact sports and strenuous activities.
